Images of working animals

From the 18th to the mid-20th century, working animals played an important role in both urban and rural areas. The SNF research project on cultures and spatial orders of working animals focuses on questions about the number, husbandry, breeding and skills of animals performing work. We are interested in the cooperation between humans and animals in the diverse contexts of work, in the particular logics of dealing with living resources and in the behavioural patterns and working abilities of animals and men. For these human-animal working contexts resulted in spatial orders and working cultures whose historical reconstruction is the focus of the project.

Texts, statistics, illustrations, photos and films serve as sources. The illustrations will be listed in the database "Arbeitstiere" and provided with metadata. A selection of the illustrations is publicly accessible on the online portal.
